i have a used binnacle control that i just installed. I am wondering if it has a problem. I cant get it to shift into reverse without pushing the big square button next to the shifter. Is this normal? Every other boat i have used you could just push up for forward, then slide it back to neutral and reverse. It slides great into forward from neutral.. but if i try to slide it back to reverse from neutral it locks up until i push the button.. Anyone used this style control before,, the control cables are brand new and I wanted to make sure they were hooked up correct... shifts like butter

Older controls had a safty feature that you had to engage to get it to shift, I had one with a lever under the throttle that you had to lift to get the throttle to move.

If it goes into reverse as it should I would say it is a safety device, I disabled mine.

Yes, that's a safety feature on the control. Also, if the button gets stuck in the down position and the motor's off, it keeps you from starting it. Big pain in the behind, IMHO
