Biodegradeable Oil?

My boat supply dealer had some biodegradeable two cycle oil in stock a week or so ago. I think it might have been an Evinrude branded product.
This might be a way to appease some of the enviromentalists that are getting 2 strokes banned in some areas. The stuff was $35 a gallon, but compared to having to buy a new 4 stroke motor, it would be well worth it to me.

Charles

Re: Biodegradeable Oil?

Hi,
I used biodegradeable oil the last 3 years in my 2-stroke I had until recently, and it never was a problem with my outboard (a Suzuki DT65).
I use a 4-stroke now (Yamaha F115).

/Bo

Re: Biodegradeable Oil?

Bo:
Did you use the biodegradeable by choice or was it required in Sweden?
How did the cost compare for you?
Evinrude regular oil is about $20 a gallon, compared to $35 for the bioD. Not too bad and the price will no doubt come down as the use/volume goes up. And Wal*Mart gets into the act. :D

Charles

Re: Biodegradeable Oil?

CharlesW,

I used the biodegradeable by choice, it is not required in Sweden to use it.
For the very environmentally aware You can also buy here "Acrylat" gas that is a special gas with very low emissions. Often used in lawnmowers, chainsaws etc, and also now in 2-stroke outboards. It is still little more expensive than regular 95 octane leadfree gas that is the most common gas here. Not that many gas stations have acrylat gas but it starts to be more common.

I used an oil that is sold by a gas company "OKQ8" here in Sweden and the outboard oil is named "Marin Bio TT". About $10 for 1 liter (about 1 US quart).

It is little more expensive than regular non bio oil but considering the not to much extra cost (for my use) for bio oil I think it is worth it. Wanted to help some to not pollute more than neccessary.

In Your case $20 per gallon for regular compared to $35 for bio oil is 75% more expensive for bio oil, but still not excessive expensive in my eyes.

Personally, 2-strokes are history for me, at least for the moment, since I'm very satisfied with my 4-stroke (a Yamaha F115, 2003).

/Bo
