<<Biofuels may be good for the environment, but they are bad news for German beer drinkers. Prices in the country's pubs look set to rise by 40 per cent this year, because Germany's farmers are growing less barley for beer production and more crops for biodiesel and bioethanol.>>

<<He pointed out that the German barley crop has been halved this year and that prices have soared by 50 per cent within 12 months. Poor-quality harvests, caused by unusually hot weather, have not helped either.>>
Man this sxxx is getting serious now; this whole Bio-Fuel thing has to be the biggest boondoggle so far this century. If we are going to continue on the Bio-Fuel, why not use an alternative to an edible/drinkable crop?

My understanding is cane, beets; even hemp, is a better source for Bio-Fuel. Why bother with making it into gasoline, when it is cheaper to make it into diesel fuel? It would sure make diesel cleaner burning.

We have trucks on the road now that are getting more power, better fuel economy, and burn cleaner. Thank you QC. I have heard that Bio-Fuel provides more horsepower,….well trucks sure can put the horsepower to better use than someone going on a 15 mile commute to work. Some of you may be saying, but tree ,hemp is illegal; we can’t be growing hemp, growing it would have our children smoking pot.

At one time hemp was one of our most plentiful crops, it is easily grown, in any kind of soil, grows like a weed, which I think it is. I can show you miles of interstate I-80 in Illinois and Iowa where it grows wild on the side of the interstate.

Seems that they grew it there years ago before it was illegal, not for recreational use, but for other uses, such as paper products. I have been told by knowledgeable sources, if you tried to use some of the wild hemp to roll a joint you would have to have a joint the size of a telephone poll to get a buzz……remember the key word is knowledgeable sources, as I am subject to random drug test to keep my CDL.:D

Tortillas are too expensive because of my pickup truck :)
"Mexico is in the grip of the worst tortilla crisis in its modern history. Dramatically rising international corn prices, spurred by demand for the grain-based fuel ethanol, have led to expensive tortillas. That, in turn, has led to lower sales for vendors such as Rosales and angry consumers."
"fuel alternatives".. LOL

I think I heard once that timber companies lobbied to make hemp illegal because it was cutting into their profits. Sorry I don't have any sources to back that up. Hemp's kinda like soybeans in that you can make so many products out of it. With our bioengineering, I don't see why we can't make some that doesn't produce TCH (sorry ZmOz :D). This is one of those things I believe the market will sort out eventually. Even if one doesn't believe in Algore's mission I just can't see anything wrong with developing new agriculture products, especially ones that have so many positive benefits.

switchgrass is the best...

however CORN has the most subsidies by Govt so that makes it price wise the best crop.

switchgrass is useless except for biofuel - so there are no subsidies for it.

South america does all switchgrass biofuel - because they do not subsidize their corn prices.

Tomatolord,

I agree with your post, (not that my opinion matters) but based on that do you think that the ethanol craze will move south to take advantage of this cheap resourse?

I believe the ethanol craze as it is laid out now is nothing more than a modern dot.com bubble.

Anyone here heard of wood pellets? Next big craze.
