I have a emachines w4885 and 2.8 ghz pentium and im trying to install a sata raid card. i been having problems and i have been told that i need to flash my bios. I cannot find anywhere the file i need and the instructions to do so. I have seen in some other forums where people have done so with this pc but im not sure the file they got or where they got it. when i boot it says Award workstation bios V6.00PG Phoenix then at the bottom it says i8456e-LPC47m-6a69vf0nc-00. any help or point into the right direction would be healpful!!!!

Re: bios flash help!

e-machines is a sales (adware) gimmick. Put your sata raid card in a real computer. You'll also notice about 4 times the performance with the same specs because of the lack of bloatware.

that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: bios flash help!

there is nothing about emachines really left in this PC including the case and power supply. Im useing the motherboard for overclocking purposes. Im clocking a pentium 2.8 at 3.8 and running VERRY stable! water cooled system. upped to a 600W power supply and am running more memory than the board supports and faster than the board supports as well. now just need to run sata drives so i need to flash the bios to support the card i have.

Re: bios flash help!

Certainly no expert here but it all sounds like a perscription for a bunch of headaches. Components were made to do certain things. Tweaking makes them unreliable.

This is not much help...If you are using a emachine MB i would not try to flash it unless you really know your way around a comp..With that said can you confirm that it is a e-machine mb and what is the board number

Here is a utility that will help you determine which mobo you have and bios version...

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

But once again i doubt you will be able to do anything...But if you run that prog and post results it will be the first step

Heres the emach support site...no listing for your board..aka no support

Re: bios flash help!

If it helps, you need 2 things. The bios image file. This is typically, a .bin file. You also need the bios flash utility. Used to, the way to do this was to put the image and flash utility on a bootable floppy. Some are released as cdrom .iso images now or even applied through an update software in Windows. The latter is the case with my Lenovo Thinkpad.

Either way, it should come from the motherboard manufacturer. It should also come with release notes explaining which issues the new bios addresses and/or which new features are added.

Be forewarned, if your bios flash fails your motherboard will be rendered useless.

If you've spent a lot of time tweaking the bios for overclocking, write all your settings down just in case the new bios image wipes out your custom settings. I think it does, but not 100% sure.

Re: bios flash help!

First of all see if you can get a more current fw file for your mb. It HAS to be exactly for your mb.
If you can't find one then your wasting your time.

Go to they're site and check.

Re: bios flash help!

I have never owned a e-machine but i do find it odd that the board wont run raid...Raid is very old stuff

Ok i take it this is what your doing... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sata-spells-trouble-scsi-raid,1161.html

Raid cards...It has been 4 yrs since ive built comps for the kids...Question i assume you have accessed your bios and turned on raid....Or is there no option for raid...When the you get a bios post does the raid card even show...Hmm does the raid card show up in your device mgr...I wouldnt be so fast or assume you need a bios update..Just call e-machine tech support they will know if that machine is capable of running that card

Question what pci slot are you using..aka 1 being nearest your cpu..Thats the slot that does the bus mastering
