I need to frame in what amounts to small storage locker space underneath the V Berth cushions. The old frame uses 1 x 2 (.75 x 1.5) as part of the framing. I don't know what type of wood it was. I am considering birch to replace the old solid wood framing as it is the best I can find in the size needed (no knots or cracks). Does birch hold up well in this type of application? The old wood was painted so I can paint the birch, gelcoat it or gelcoat and glass it.

Birch rots before the leaves come off while the tree is still standing. Not a good choice where there is moisture

If tou are going to use wood, use Teak, White Oak or Ash

Thanks. Will look into those. This wood actually won't see any water as it sits just below the V Berth cushions. Water up that high and the boat is sunk...

cypress and southern pine are good as well, even cedar if it's not under much load.
