Re: Black boat questions??

ill tell you what.......you place your shiney new black boat in the water on a really hot day......have fun .....enjoy the boat.......then .....whne you are really hot and want to go swimming?.....how are ya gonna do it?.....if any part of your skin touches the black.......the pain will be.....well....painfull.

thats why most boats are white to some degree.

dark blue is bad enough.........and never....never get a black or dark blue seat.

I've also heard (and don't know the truth) that black paint or gelcoat will unadhere from the fiberglass its on overtime because of the heat that it builds up. I have to assume theres some truth to it since most manufacturers use light colours in there colouring prosess.

And... a high gloss finish with black will show every water snot and scratch you get on it.

Tan interior sounds nice. Any pics of this boat? (WE LOVE PICS:D) Is the entire hull black or just the decals on the side and the covers?

Re: Black boat questions??

i have a white boat, lime green seats, lime green carpet, and a dark green (almost black) throw mat i just throw on the floor of my boat...

on a hot day. ya can touch any white surface. the lime green seats and carpet are certainly warmer than the white boat. the dark green (almost black) throw mat ya can't even touch. very hot... i'd forgo a black boat myself...

I've noticed that colored boats - doesn't matter what color - seem to fade to look chalky before white boats.

Our boat is black with silver flake. We love it. The black gel isn't much hotter than the gray seats. We never have had adhesion or fading issues at all,and its 20 yrs. old. Theres always alot of water or a towel around to cool off deck before you sit on it.
Black boats are cool.

My boat has a neutral gel coat, but the seats are a dark brown. I have to lay towels down before I can sit on the seats. I think everything on a boat (gel coat & interior) should be a lite color.

How do you remove the chalk ? I have a boat that has white & grey, fading toward the back that is black.

Any Ideas ?

thanks.

Re: Black boat questions??

I had a Gambler bass boat about 10 years ago that was gloss black, with black carpet, and silver vinyl trim. You could fry and egg on that thing after a few hours out in the sun. I sold it after only a couple of years.
It was a great looking boat that ran like a speed boat with it's 250hp motor but it was like having a second job when it came to cleaning it and keeping it looking good. Which was the main reason I sold it, I didn't want to own it when the finish finally faded, and anything that got that hot, was bound to fade.
I've seen a few of them since then, all were faded on the top surfaces.
And like TD said, forget having any bikini clad women on board, touching any black surface on a sunny day was like sitting on a hot burner on the stove.

your gellcoat id oxidising.....either give it a light sand with 1200 grit, or use a rubbing compound on it.....then wax and buff.....

but the oxidation needs to be removed

Kind of makes you wonder why so many outboard companies paint their engine cowls black or a dark color? seems it would make sence to go with a white or at least a light color. I would think keeping the heat down in the motor would be something you would want to achive.

Re: Black boat questions??

The president of Cobalt Boats recently did an interview where he was asked why most boats are white. You can go to any marina and see roughly 80% of hulls are white. Recalling that, it boiled down to consumer demand, and cost to produce. Of course the hull would get hotter as would a black car with dark interior. In a perfect world, I would love a solid color hull. In reality my Chap has a dark band of blue that goes from pretty wide at the transom to a few inches at the bow. In just a few long distance trailerings since owning, I can see sand marks on the blue gel and of course the white is fine. Every single little error or bit of damage shows up and is highlighted on colored gel. After I boutht my Chap, I saw a 2008 Crownline small BR used the guy was forced to sell. It had the single color gel coat option meaning every inch of the glass was dark blue. It sure looked nice but I am not dilligent enough to keep that looking good. Of course the x factor is price...if it is right then go for it.

3M color restore, part # 09089 Get a commercial buffer and follow the instructions on the bottle exactly. After it's finished and stays out of the water three or four days. Put a good coat of Boat wax on it. I like McGuires Flagship premium. Chuck's Color Restore.

Black radiates more heat than light colors. Black absorbs more heat than light colors. So if you have something that gets hot and want it cool, then paint it black. If you have something cool that you want to heat up, paint it black.
