On draining Gbox found smelly black oil with a few metal fragments. Gbox/motor is running fine. Have only just purchased 1981 3cycl Johnson. Should I simply refill or should I flush first with some type of flushing oil. Thanks!!

Depends what you mean by metal fragments, but whatever they are they're not supposed to be there. Unless maybe you're talking about the fine fuzz from normal wear that sticks to the magnetic drain plug on some auto (and for all I know marine) motors and gearboxes.

Also depends what you mean by black smelly oil, but if it's burnt from overheating then something went seriously wrong, like a bearing frying itself. On the positive side, it ain't milky so the seals are OK!

Personally, if in doubt I'd pull it down now to see what happened, and fix it before it gets worse and damages other parts which might be expensive to replace.

I'd rather do it on land now in my own time than be at sea in bad conditions with a no-go motor in a panic and wishing I had done it when I had the chance.

Like Tinkerer2 says, fuzz is OK on the plug magnet, but particles that you can rub between you finger and do not dissolve are bad news. As for the smell, lower unit oil that has been in there for some time always stinks to high heaven. Hard to tell if it's burnt or just a normal smell. Draining it will tell the story!!

Change it, run it, check it. Might be fine.
