black chunks in gas tank

I read other posts about cleaning out tanks but my question still remains. What are the black chunks in my gas tank? I got half of them out but not sure how to get the rest of it out.(It isn't a built in tank) Blast it out with water? If the float or other rubber parts inside the tank are old could that be what the chunks are from? Do I need a new tank? The thing was not running well so I suspect this is why. Do I need to clean out my carb now....what else needs to be looked at?

I wouldn't go for a new tank just yet. You could blast the tank out with high pressure water but would need to be sure that you got the water out. One of my neighbors did this with success. The other option is to leave it alone and let your in line fuel filter stop the crud from reaching the carb. I assume that you have an in line fuel filter/water seperator - - - - ????
