Black goo dripping from prop--OK?

Hi all

Another dumb newbie question:

I hope that it's normal to have black oily stuff dripping from the prop. I assume this is from the exhaust? The lower unit lube is still golden--not milky at all.
I don't remember seeing this before, but those were in the blissful days before engine trouble, so I probably wasn't looking.

This is an 82 70hp Johnson

Thanks!

See the article on "Oil leaking around the lower unit" on the Engine FAQs board HERE

You could double check to make sure the engine is coming up to normal cyl head temps when warmed up. If the engine is running cold at idle, you will get poorer combustion in the cyls and it will tend to smoke more and you will get more of the black exhaust residue. Borrow a laser temp gun to check. Should be in the 145-155 temp range.

it is normal for leftover 2-stroke oil to be present around the exhaust, so as long as it is nothing else, its ok

its just unburnt oil dripping from the powerhead out of the exhaust (prop) its common for 2 stroke motors

Smells like gas it is unburnt 2 stroke oil. (no issue)
Smells like rotten eggs it is most likely lower unit oil.(needs investigation)

Re: Black goo dripping from prop--OK?

Thank you one and all. That's a relief for sure. I'm planning to get her back on the water this weekend (after rebuilding carbs, etc) so my heart sunk when I saw the black ooze. I'm relieved to know that it's normal.

Now that I think about it, there was probably a bunch of unburned fuel in the exhaust after I accidentally filled the lower cylinder with gas.

Thanks again everybody. This is a great resource!

david Brum,
Yes, that is perfectly normal and you probably have more of that black oily goo from pumping ffule into that cylinder that feeds the fue pump to allow the fuel pump diaphram to pulsate and feed fuel to the carbs after the engine is gong. Hey, how is the engine running for you and did you check the spark on all 3 of your spark plugs? I would change out your spark plugs and use Champion becuase that is what all Johnson/Evinrude outboards are designed to run on. Like I said check all of your coil connections and make sure where they mount to all goruns and the spot where the coil is mounted is cleaned using sandpaper to ensure a good ground for good spark. Also cehck to see if the coils has cracks in them and if they do spark is leaking out of the coils and you will not get a good strong spark to your spark plugs, it wil be a weak spark and the engine will run rough and not run smoothly. Also make sure your spark plug wires are secure on both ends, from the coil to the spark plug itself and fromthe power pack to the cil; connections and to the stator, basically every connection make sure it is secured tightly to the other connection it mates up to. Let u sknow how your outbaord is doing after your trip to the water with her. take care, Bob:)
