I don't have any internet at the lake and the guy next door uses his Bberry with teather app. to hook up his laptop. App cost 50 bucks then I would have to dowload software to laptop to make it work. Is this the best way to go are is there something else out there that is better. Cellular South has a teather Kit for 69.00. Do I really need that? Dont use it that much over there except to check rivers stages and weather forcast mostly which I can do on my phone. But my bride would use it more to play her bejeweled game. Thanks

It depends on your carrier. Some don't allow tethering even though you supposedly have "unlimited" internet.

My Blackberry is painfully slow at best. Can't imagine trying to play games on the internet with it. Might want to look into an aircard as well.

As someone mentioned, you need to find out from your provider if they support it. With T-Mobile, I believe it's Free, AT&T charges an additonal fee.

You don't need to purchase anything to use it. Just make sure that you have the latest Blackberry Desktop Manager installed, and there is a easy to follow wizzard in there for useing your BB as a modem.

I have done it with my T-Mobile BB 9700. It works OK as long as you have a good 3G connection. If you only have EDGE, it won't be very good to do much more than sync up email on your PC (max speed for edget is around 100kbps)

Have you checked crackberry.com I have found some great feedback there. I have not used a teather however, I have "heard" if you get the software and teather direct it is cheaper then going through your carrier ;)

There are sites out there that allow you to 'jailbreak" your phone then teather it to the data stream of your phones plan. For me I already have unlimited so jailbreaking my IPhone allows me to access that data plan w/o paying a monthly fee to ATT. Jailbreaking voids your warranty however. But... if you did like I did and tried to update my phone w/o removing the jailbreak, it messes up the firmware on the phone and I spent 3 hours at the Apple store getting it reset... but it was free, no cost. I found out EVERYONE that works at the Apple store had a jailbroke phone and knew exactly how to get my jailbreak back...

I'm sure BB and others can do this as well. BTW, it is not against the law to jailbreak the IPhone. A judge ruled that if a third party unlocks a feature already on your phone, it is allowed... But it is also allowed by Apple to void your warranty over it. So, the recommendation is to jailbreak only after warranty expires...

It is nice to access the internet when no wifi is available as long as you have a few bars on your cell phone available, you can access it...

I recommend PDANET http://www.junefabrics.com/blackberry/index.php,

you can use either the free version, which does not allow you to access secure sites (HTTPS) sites, or pay the $29 for the complete version.

I use it on my Driod and it works great.
