After an accident yesterday (see pic below) I got some new trim arms and installed them in my cases. When attaching it all together and lifting the outdrive up for the first time, it took about half of the tank of 10w-30 and sounded pretty good. I could hear the air getting pumped out each time I took it down and back up. I kept filling it up with more oil until one time I was bring it down and the cap blew off and white fomey oil spewed all out and then the system sounded bad. I assume I added too much oil? Did I try to purge it too many times? Before I started oil was crystal clear. There was no water in the system.

System is a 90 Alpha with Alpha HD Arms.

Re: Bleeding T&T System

He probably didn't have Mercury Power Trim fluid.

That's ok I suppose....

The following is from Mercury Service manual #14:

IMPORTANT: Check the oil level with the stern drive unit in the full down position.
IMPORTANT: If quicksilver Power Trim and steering fluid is not available, SAE 10W-30
or 10W-40 engine oil can be used in the system.

It's ok to use motor oil. I like trans fluid because it's red and easy to identify in a dark engine compartment. It also doesn't foam up as badly and when it does the bubbles dissipate a little faster than oil.

The operative thing here is to READ the MANUAL. Any manual for the trim system. They're all about the same for most Mercs.

Yup, my book from 1990 states 10w-30 or Quicksilver PS fluid. My Clymers book says it too.

HT, If i do need to add more in teh future, can I go ahead and just add tranny fluid then? Will mixing hurt anything?

I would not mix them......
& you should never need to add....
If you do, you have a leak, it is a closed system.....;)
