blew up my stern drive

Hello all
i Have a 87 omc cobra 4.3 l stern drive model # 984541 i blew my upper gears i have seen the gears all over ebay for 800.00 bucks what i would like to know is does any body know where i could get used gears

If the upper gears blew due to lack of lube then you more than likely have damage to the lower gearset as well. So, your best bet would be to find a rebuilt drive, or a used one. Or you can refit with a drive from SEI Sterndrives which is in effect an aftermarket Merc. You'll need the OMC conversion kit & the drive. The cost? About 2k.

Gears aren't going to help you a bit unless you have all those special tools needed to shim the gears. You really need to look in the lower unit as well, if there is metal in the gear lube, it's damaged the lower as well.

it was not low on oil also when the gears came apart i shut it down and got towed in the only reason i can find that they came apart is i just changed to a 4 blade stainless prop and ran into a very large submersed log and stern drive came apart with in five minutes afterwords

Like Don S said...if you don't have all the specialty tools and the knowledge to rebuild an outdrive gears will do you no good.... I looked into the tools and being an auto tech for over 20 years....It would be almost $800 in tools and a lot of time....one mistake and all your work and money is down the drain.... I too wasted an outdrive Alpha One and I am buying an SEI for my rig.....$1300 with a 3 year NO questions asked warr. It's a no brainer!

i just dont have that kind of money found a whole upper unit on ebay 600 bucks think i will be goin with that

But you lower unit WILL have metal in it so that will blow shortly.....it's your boat do as you want....were just trying to warn you... Good luck....
