Block Assembly, Pistons

I have a couple questions about installing the pistons on a 150p V6 Evinrude. Most of my rebuild background is v8 autos, but I want to make sure that I get this right.

1. I need to use some form of grease to make sure that the pins in the wrist pins stay in place while I replace the pistons. Can I use white automotive assembly grease for this?

2. Is there anything special that I should do when putting the pistons in for lubrication of the cylinder walls when installing the pistons? I figure on wiping the cylinder walls down with a light coating of 2 cycle oil, but is this sufficient for initial startup?

Mik

Mik,

I use white automotive grease when installing the roller pins, as far as I know thats what your supposed to use.

After I do a rebuild I pour a couple cap-fulls of 2 stroke oil down the plug holes of each cylinder, in addition to what you said: wipe the walls as well during rebuild.

Your first tank should be mixed with extra oil as well.

Ive done 6-7 2 stroke rebuilds now with no problems yet, knock on wood!!
-John

By the way, I always pour some oil into the crankshaft bearings as well while im in there just for good measure....

Be prepared for some smoke when you start it up....

I think you will be OK Mik. Someone suggested I used vasoline because it melts away at low temps and it worked fine, the only problem was I had to assemble the pistons inside an air conditioned space because in my garage the dang stuff melted. I also oiled the heck out of my cylinders the only thing it did was smoke like heck the first few seconds after it started. Ran the skeeters off.

hello
use vasoline or needle bearing assy grease. most other greases wont lube well and have additives that dont burn off as well as are not rapidly souluble in gas. the lube needs to disapear rapidly after startup so the oil can lubricate them.
good luck and keep posting
