Hey guys I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place that was reasonably priced to send out my block, preferably in Michigan if possible, to get the cylinders bored. I have called a couple places and gotten everywhere from 65 bucks a hole to 25 a hole from a place in Florida.
Also were would a good rebuild kit be availible for these motors? I need the pistons too, I found some on ebay for 550.

Motor is a Johnson 115 crossflow late 80s early 90s. Thanks again Ezek for the help in the block. If this goes right Im going to just buy that block :)

Any place that does engine rebuild work can do it for you. Doesn't have to be a marine repair shop. You probably have a few places right in your old home town that can do it. I'd just check the Yellow Pages.

Mine cost me $100 total. It's a 3cyl, had one hole bored, 2 holes honed, 1 broken bolt removed. Whoever does it, make sure they "chamfer the ports" or the rings may get stuck and break, causing another rebuild. It basically angles the edges of the ports so the rings don't stick and break. From the factory they are like that, but once honed or bored, it might wear off and need to be re-done. A basic auto machine shop did mine, but they also do marine engines for a local shop, and the shop referred me to these guys. Did a good job, took 'em 3 days to get it back to me.

I'll admit to being a bit out of touch on prices but I wouldn't proceed without checking the price of a rebuilt powerhead. I recall seeing some decent prices advertized by some shops in Florida. It may well be cheaper and you would have a warrantee.

Re: Block Boring and honing

just got a differnt block, trust me isnt cheaper. less then 1000 to rebuild it compared to 2300 to get a rebuild. Called around this afternoon and every place that does standard engine work says they dont want to touch it. Called some marinas and got costs of 110 per hole to 45. So next question, if three can be honed I was told it was fine to run one oversized to the others since the pistons are all the smae weight. True or no?

Bi-State Marine in Michigan did my 1956 Rd's for me. No one else would touch them.

They are on the web. Google Bi-State Marine + Toledo, Ohio.

Don't trust a automotive shop to rebore a 2 cycle outboard engine. A 2 cycle has ports, that mean's an interupped cut for the boring bar. They need a solid set up. Use a exsperienced marine shop for this type of work.

When I was working on outboards for a living I bored cylinders all the time. I don't remember what we charged, but that was 30 years ago anyway. With labor rates as high as $90-100 per hour these days, I don't think anybody is cheating you. In fact, some sound way too cheap.

Yes, you can bore one, two, three, or more cylinders--don't have to do them all. In fact, it is sort of a waste to bore them if not needed. You might have to do another rebuild in the future and the material will be gone.

Re: Block Boring and honing

I just picked up my 3 cyl 70 HP block today from ther auto machine shop.

I had the guy hone it clean...there were just a few spots around some of the ports that didnt quite clean up...but I figure is is best to stay inside the tolerance needed for the ring gap and piston.

he charged my $40 for honign all three holes and then cleaning the block.

he said they are a pain because they are blind holes....meaning you cant run the bore or hone all the way through back and forth...there is a flat bottom on a portion of the holes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

much more work than a car block

good luck

Re: Block Boring and honing

Yea see thats what I was told too. Im going to google Bi state see what they charge. Finally got ahold of an older marine 30 mins away and he said no problem 45 bucks a hole fitted to the piston and I can wait in my car. Probably going to be the way to go. So next set is, rebuild kits. Cheaper to buy the pistons seperate? Is the 550 one I found a good deal? And does anyone make a heaver head gasket for these?
