I have a 1984 Mirage 217 with a 1984 small block Chevy 5.7. Every time I shut the engine off, it drains out through the outdrive. I just bought the engine brand new this year and the outdrive is also new. My concern is when I am out on the water, if I start the engine after I've been sitting awhile, that rush of cold water could crack something.

Well every raw water cooled engine out there has been running the same as your for decades. I think if it was a problem it would have been solved by now. Stop worrying and go boating...

Besides not being a problem please explain why you think all the water would drain out? It can't get past the impellor.

After 10 minutes or so, I can remove the riser and exhaust manifold drain plug, and they are empty. The only water that drains is the water that is in the engine, I think. I'm worried about the risers or exhaust manifolds cracking.

I'm worried about the risers or exhaust manifolds cracking.

What exactly is any different now than in the past 26 years?

How many risers or exhaust manifolds has it had replaced in 26 years?

Although if they are 26 years old and have never been replaced, it would probably be a REAL GOOD idea to replace them.

So where's the water going to?

There's only 2 ways for water to drain out of the block, through the exhaust and through the cooling water feed pipe. Both have high points at the top of the engine.

Is water draining out of the blocks (aka leaking) into the boat?

No, not into the boat but out of the outdrive. By the way, thank you Simoniz for showing some compassion. Sorry we all can't be as smart as the rest of you. Instead of all the 'know it all' replies, try treating people with some respect instead of delibrately insulting their intelligence. Sorry for being so sensative, but some of you need to learn how to treat a lady.

If in fact your manifolds are empty after sitting ten minutes it is important to find out where the water going. You are right in being concerned because everyone is right. They should not drain out, and it's not draining out the sterndrive. I would have one question. When you restart the engine does it crank hard, or "bump" when you first start cranking it? I would look for that as a sign of hydrolocking. I'm only considering your worrying about cracking a manifold when in fact it may already be internaly cracked.

There is no bump when I go to start it. It does however take a bit for water to start exiting the thru hull exhaust because it needs to fill back up first. By the way, thanks for the input and help.

Did you make sure the exhaust manifold were not plugged up at the drain. You should take the plug all the way out and poke a small screw driver up the hole to make sure it is not just clogged with sediment/rust and not letting the water drain out.

Some clear hose from tstat hsg to the manifolds would let you watch it. If it is draining out backwards, I'd be quite shocked.

Siphons are weird though.... they can do crazy things
