Block interchange 70's model ?

Can anybody tell me if a 1978 Johnson 55hp block can be replaced by a 1976 (Found a used 1976)?
Johnson or Evinrude matter?

What year range will work will bolt up without modifications?

I know that electonics vary but are any shared? Did a search and couldn't find specifics.
