I for the life of me cannot reach the starboard side block drain plug.Do you have to open both sides to get all water out?I can reach the plug on port side, exhaust plugs and plug on water pump hose. Also how hard is it to get thermostat off it's a mercruiser 5.0 220 hp carbed. And is it worth the trouble or should i just bring up to temp. then anti freeze through muffs.

Ayuh,... It's Absolutely Necessary to drain ALL of the motor...

A 1/2 azzed winterization usually leads to a Brand New motor come Spring...

Ayuh,... I winterize by Draining the water... dry,... Air just Don't Freeze...

There's write ups all over the net,+ some up in the Adults Only section at the top of this forum explainin' the Antifreeze method...

as fer the Unreachable plug,....
Sometimes ya gotta remove things Other than what you wanta work on, to get where ya Wanta work...
I donno, I don't know your boat,... Boat Manufactures do their Best to make life Miserable for people like me, workin' n this stuff...

Re: block plug

some of the larger engines are a pain and unless your a stick insect.may need to remove parts and cutting an arm access hole may be a blessing in disguise as manifold drains are even harder & spark plug replacement too.both sides need completly draining to save mega probs next year.

Re: block plug

Beginning to think bringing engine up to temp then running atf through muffs is way i will go.Have a feeling i will create more problems trying to remove plugs than i want to.BTW is it true that thermostat doen't need to be "opened' because there is a "bypass hose"?

Re: block plug

There will be 1-2 quarts of water sitting in each side of a V8 block. If you choose to leave 1 side alone, and pump anti-freeze in, there's no guarantee that the a/f will displace all the water on that side.

If it's THAT hard to get at it, remove the exhaust manifold & riser, put a hose fitting in place of the plug, add a 2-3 foot hose with a plug on the end.

Or, better yet, install a quick drain/inject system like this one;

Re: block plug

For the rebuild of my boat I put in removable sides to the engine compartment, so I can get at all the drains easily.

If you can't get at it easily, take it to a dealer for winterization service that has a guarantee... if they do it wrong, you get a new engine :)

Re: block plug

The tube is connected to a fitting that takes the place of a car style plug. For that system to work, the actual plug has to be on the end of the tube, so you can open it after you get it through the transom drain hole.

Untwist a wire coat hanger, fish under the engine with the hook for the tube. Bring it up beside the engine and put the chain back on.
