Blocked head - Water jacket

I've layed up a Yamaha 8 (salt water) for 7 months. After doing a cautionary service (lubes, water pump, compression test, idle adjust) I noticed that no water was coming out of the drain hole. Thinking I put the impeller in back to front (should still work, but not for as long as the right way...) no, it was correct.

I regularly have to clear the little nipple on the underside, as salt deposits tend to block it. I suspected that maybe I have a big salt blockage in the head somewhere...

I took a straw to the tube that leads to the head, and blew. Nothing coming out the nipple at all. In fact no water came out the tube when I pulled the lower unit off. Blowing hard gave a bit of a gurgle from where the exhaust comes into the shaft casing, but no luck elsewhere.

Does anyone know how I can clear this blockage in the head? It's on a yacht, so a little hard to access the luxuries of the home workshop...

I'm reasonably sure there isn't a thermostat on the 8hp model, and it shouldn't really need one...

I don't know why you would think they don't. They have them for the same reason most water cooled engines do. To keep them operating at a proper temprature.

If you truly have a deposit blocked head and not just a stuck thermostat, you are probably going to need a pick and scraper to really clear it. Drop the lower unit and remove the thermostat and clamp a garden hose on the water pickup tube where it joins the water pump. Check your flow with the thermostat out (put the thermostat cover back on) and see whether you have good flow or not. If you don't, pull the head and get to scrapeing.
