i have a 2006 glastron gx185. on the back of the boat there are 4 exhaust ports for the bilge blower. there are 2 ports on the left and 2 on the right. how many ports should air be coming out of? when i turn on the blower air only comes out of 1 port on the left side of the boat. does this seem right to anyone?

thanks

Re: Blower Help

don't know about your new boat. but for my old boat that would be true.

i think what it is, is the bower blows out one hole. it's creating low pressure inside the engine compartment so the air enters through the other three moving (exhausting) the air out the blower hole that blows outward aft.

thats my take.. see what everyone else says..

Re: Blower Help

sounds logical enough, thanks for your input. i did notice that the 1 port that is blowing air has the exaust hose that goes the lowest into the engine compartment. just want to make sure everything is ship shape before i take her out for the first time this year.

That is the same way it is on my boat. On mine the open holes allow air to enter the compartmant when at cruising speed. But mine are mounted on the sides

thats the same way mine was . I added a second blower to exhuast on the starboard side. so now I have one exhaust and one return on each side.

Re: Blower Help

Almost all boats have the blower set up as you mentioned. One side is an intake and the other is an exhaust. The blower name is actually kind of confusing since it actually works more like a vaccum. It sucks the air OUT of the bilge and blows it outside, the other vent is an intake to bring in fresh air. Most vents have 4 holes in them, but only two are usually connected by the accordion tubing.

I'm pretty sure it's a CG requirement to be setup that way. One maintenance item I have never seen mentioned is to check the blower inlet and outlet hose condition, the passive intake hose condition; and to check that the passive intake vent hose and blower intake vent hose go all the way to the bilge under the engine, uninterrupted.

Re: Blower Help

My '04 SX195 has two ports, one in the same position where each pair are on yours. The one on the Starboard side just has a hose connected to it that runs down to low in the bilge. The one on the Port side runs to a blower then down to low in the bilge as well.

When running it intakes on the Starboard side and exhausts on the Port side. There is not a perfect seal where the engine cover/sundeck goes down under the gunwales so I imagine some air is drawn from there as well.

Re: Blower Help

It sounds like your boat is fine.
I taken 3 Coast Guard Classes and 2 US Power Squadron Classes.

The Bilge Blower should be set up to suck air out of the lowest part of the bilge below the engine but not so low that it can be covered by bilge water. From the blower it should go to a cowl that is open to the rear or faces the stern. Usually also have a second Hose to the same part of the bilge to a second rear facing cowl. Only difference is no blower.

On the other side of the boat should have 2 foward faceing cowl with hoses that go into the engine carpartment but higher than the carburator.

The way it should work is at the dock before starting the engine you turn on the bilge blower and it sucks heavy gas fumes out of the lowest part of the bilge. Air will come in the other hoses. As you get under way on the road or on the water the second hose to the rear facing cowl also sucks air out of the low part of the bilge. At higher speeds it will move more air than the hose with the bilge blower on it.

Under way the two foward facing cowl should bring in air form the out side and dump it high in the engine compartment.

So what should happen is air come in above the engine and help to force heavy gas fumes down to the bottom where they are sucked out the the bilge blower and the second rear facing cowl.

Of course you should have no gas fumes at all but the idea to to suck them out before they get high enough in the engine area to be inigited by a spark.
