A lot of times when I run the blower on my 91 Starcraft Eurtostar with Mercruiser 4.3L and Alpha1 drive it squeals and makes a lot of noise and varies in pitch. Other times it is quiet. Does anybody kniow what is causing this noise? It seems like it is working.
I ordered a new blower. Installed it and now no more noise. I am a happy boater.

Re: Blower noise

Mine did the same thing, until I sprayed WD40 on the fan shaft, using the little red hose. Has worked most of the summer, but is starting to make noise again. I just ordered a new blower from ********. The cheap bushings on the blower tend to dry out, plus I imagine dirt and crud get in between the shaft and bushing. Good luck!

Re: Blower noise

Rust in the bearing causes the squeeling....some lube will quiet it down but it should be replaced.

My blower did that for 5 years . . . Bearing noise. Usually, it would quiet down . . . I finally replaced it last year.

A blower motor that squeals has bad bearings and as such is drawing excessive electrical current. You can lube it over an over again but it will be short lived. The sleeve bearings are oil impregnated bronze and the lube is gone and cannot be replaced. Replace the blower as it will ultimately fail when you need it most. (Right after refueling.)

A squeeling motor has the potential to start itself on fire at some point in the near future! I've seen it happen, and now consider a squeel to be an absolute indicator of needing to replace the motor asap!

Just change it... I have seen first hand blown boats when starting with explosive gas mix in the bilge due to the lack of proper ventilation.... Trust me, you dont want that...

Re: Blower noise

If you remove the blower and move the fans with your hand, you'll probably notice a lot of play in the shaft and electric motor. You'll also sometimes see where the fins on the fan rub against the side of the blower housing because of the play - also sometimes causing the squeaking sound.

Replacements are cheap and its an easy job. Replace sooner than later.....
