Blower question - new I/O owner

I just bought a 1989 Four Winns 170 Freedom with a 2.3L OMC/Ford engine. My question concerns the bilge blower - when I flip the switch on the dash, I don't hear anything - should I? I'm not sure what to expect from a functional blower. Also, are the two vent plates, one starboard & one port, related to the blower?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should hear a faint fan sound and also feel the air coming out of the vent holes. Do not start your new boat without first running the fan or airing out the bilge unless you want a big boom.

The job of the blower is to draw gas fumes from the bilge. If you remove your engine cover you should see the blower with a 3 or 4 inch flexible hose coming from the bilge area. Then the blower pushes the air out another hose to one of your vents. You should be able to hear the blower (especially without the engine running) and you should be able to feel the air coming out the vent. You could have a blown fuse, seized blower, open connection. The vents on both sides are normally opposite each other, as the boat is moving along one vent will feed fresh air in and the other vent will have air drawn out.

open the engine hatch and turn it on.you should hear it running. If not get it fixed. One vent pulls in fresh air the other is the exhaust for the bilge blower. walmart even sells them. Not expensive considering what they do for your safety..
Sorry Bob,you type faster..

Thanks for the quick replies... This forum is great! I will definately make sure it is functional before I use the boat.

You can get a new blower from Boaters World or West marine and others.

I added a second blower to my boat.
