I have a 1986 Johnson 150 V6, I went out and put muffs on this morning and let it run for few minutes before taking out. After a few minutes of running it started to over heat and blow steam. All the plugs are good, no steam cleaning here. I did find a bunch of mud betwen the lower unit and the neck that the unit connects to. I then took our the t-stats and found a bunch of mud and deprie up there. I cleaned it all out the best I could. I started the motor for a few seconds and let water come out of the t-stat holes and shut it down. I put t-stats back in, and it is still over heating and blowing steam.

Re: Blowing Steam

If you found mud/debries in your T-stats, you've got mud/debries elsewhere in your cooling system. Probably need to pull the lower unit and have a look at your water pump (new impeller at the least).
Backlash

Re: Blowing Steam

Thanks for the reply! I did pull the lower unit off and did replace the water pump and flushed the cooling system out as best as possible thru the inlet tube. I have spent all day pulling the engine apart and flushing and cleaning.

I kept the springs out of the t-stats and man it made a world of diffrence once I got it all clean. I have come to figure out that the t-stats are bad and need to be replaced. I do appreciate all you all's help. I cant say it enough this site is awsome.
