My 87 glasstream bass boat transom is getting weak so i landed a 1993 stratos 274fs. Solid boat, in very good condition. But the 120 has a hole in the block from the rod exploding. My plan is to swap my 135 with a 4" manual jackplate off the glasstream to the stratos and then eventually get a 150 for it. How hard could this be. It appears straight forward and looks like a saturday project. Also, could the props be swapped out. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My concern is the shaft length but i believe with a jackplate that would solve any issues, correct??

Re: Blown 120 johnson swap

not enoght info on the motors but if there both the same brand with the same connector plug thats a good start. if both legs are the same lenth then i can not see a problem there but the jack plate may cause a problem if the steering cable is not long enoght or it can not make the bend out of the hole in the cap to aline with the motor. motor make/model numbers would realy help then we can tell the age and design of the engines you are talking about.

Re: Blown 120 johnson swap

jp the year and hp help but the model number has the shaft lenth etc

go to this website http://www.marineengine.com/parts/p...um=cpc&utm_campaign=Parts&utm_content=Johnson and use the model numbers it will tell you all about the engine. if the shafts are the same lenth then its a easy swap i think both motors are red plug which was 73-96 if i remember correctly so everything should be plug and play. im not sure what year they changed the tilt and trim so you may want to check that before you start and decied which trim unit you want to keep. the older trim unit motors had 3 wires the newer style had 2 wires. if you have 2 diffrent types then call out for help to decied if you should keep the newer tilt/trim etc.

p.s if you scrap out the old motor keep the tilt trim and relay box as well as the other parts as some parts are getting expensive especially the trim gauge sensor

Re: Blown 120 johnson swap

Glenn, great info and thanks. Actually the tilt motor for the 76' has been changed over thanks to a thread here. I would love to keep the 93' tilt/trim since the 76' model does leak down and is simply old. And while your reading this maybe you can tell me the best place/best price for a power head for the 120

no idea of the best price just be carefull as the a lot of engines of diffrent hp used the same block so its easy to end up with a motor where diffrent parts have been used
