Had my 1995 Four Winns with 5.0 Cobra engine on lake today and one of the rubber hose that connects the exhaust had a blow out, when it happen the engine stopped and and wasn't able to start it again. The hose looked to be in good condition before it blew. What would cause a hose to blow out like that. Also I need to know where the flappers are located and how to change them. Was thinking maybe a Flapper could be stuck causing back pressure on the hose. Thanks

Howdy,

Rubber parts in a stern-drive exhaust system become VERY HOT (when there's no cooling water flowing) in the manifolds/risers, This can happen anytime the raw water pump fails, and/or the manifolds and risers become so clogged (with rust) that they don't flow enough water to keep them cool.

Either way, the rubber burns internally.......... enough that it can quickly disintegrate.

Also I need to know where the flappers are located and how to change them. Was thinking maybe a Flapper could be stuck causing back pressure on the hose. Thanks

The "flappers" are also known as the exhaust seals..... (3853864 EXHAUST SEAL ASSY) They're located in the "3850794 EXHAUST PIPE" (AKA the "exhaust Y-pipe") If installed.

You can view all those parts at BRP -- Parts Catalogs ..........Just click on "View Parts Catalogs" (you don't have to put in an email address)

Click the drop-down menu and select "Sterndrives" etc.
