Blown Gear Case? It's not the Shear Pin....1967 Evinrude 80HP

What started out as my Senior project in high school is still a work in progress after my second year in college

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/first-boat-project-442612.html

I have a 1967 Evinrude Speediefour V4 80hp manual shift OB. It was serviced last summer and was running great until some friends and the other owner backed it into shore. They unknowingly started it in reverse (the the nose of the boat facing away from shore) and it backed into the shore, whit the prop striking the ground.

Now, whenever you give it more than 1/4 throttle it just spins without sending any power tot the prop. Basically, if you are just idling in gear it will putter around, but as soon as you give it much gas you just hear spinning and the boat loses power. I checked the shear pin and that is fine.

Also, before this happened, I would periodically hear a knock form the OB.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the lower unit and the gears. What do you guys think it is and how should I go about fixing it?

Thanks in advance!

You may just have a spun prop hub. Mark the prop shaft and prop in a straight line, run it and see if the marks get out of alignment. If they do the hub has spun.

Thank you!

I pulled the prop off again today. There was remnants of some sort of black material as can be seen in the pictures. I took a screw driver and put that where the shear pin goes and was able to spin the hub (see video). I ordered a NOS prop and a thrust washer, which was not even there when I took the prop off.

Boy, that was an easy one. Couldn't get your video to work though.

So I got the new prop, put it on, and took the boat out today to test her out. It worked! Thanks so much! So glad it was an easy fix.
