I am looking to purchase a bass boat. It has a 1979 Johnson 150TL crossflow. The guy says he was running and the engine quit. He took it to a mechanic and they said he blew the head gasket but everything else looks good. Is it possible to blow a head gasket from overheating without damaging anything else? Thank you.

Absolutely possible and very common.

However, you must confirm by inspection that there is no other damage and that requires removing the cylinder head and in this case, the bypass covers.

Once you have the new cylinder head gasket installed, you will still need to do the compression test to be sure that there is not a problem on the exhaust side of the cylinders.

Overheat conditions don't just happen, they are usually caused by lack of preventative maintenance, so the cause must be found and corrected.
