I have a 1979 140 evinrude that I just got. It has been sitting for a couple of years. I got it started today and after a minute or two of running I noticed some water on top of the port side head right along a gasket. I was looking for possible causes for a blown head gasket.

Overheating is the most common cause. Whatever the cause you need to fix it quickly as those engines do not like water inside. What do the plugs look like? When you replace the gaskets you should get the heads checked to make sure that they are not warped. Also replace the deflectors.

Re: Blown head gasket?

Was the water coming from between the head and the cylinder platform or from the water jacket cover on the head?

It could be from the water jacket cover I will have to look closer and see if i can tell exactly.

I am new to this motor and until I can get a manual I am kinda guessing what is what.

Thanks

I'll bet water jacket gasket,if it was the head ,chances are the motor would get wter, and run poorly, just ,gingerly try and tighten the bolts inn the location, without snapping, should do it

Well it looks to be the second gasket from the outside moving in. The engine doesnt seem to run real rough every once in a while it will cough and give a puff of white smoke but it is not a constant thing. Does this sound like a possible head gasket problem. I am going to have to replace it anyway to stop the water leak on top of the head. I ran this motor for probably 15 minutes on the hose and got about a tsp of water.

compression is ok,the plugs look ok,the picture where you show as leaking is the headgasket ,if you see water seeping from the spot then I would say its leaking ,but from what I see of the plugs, there is no water getting in the cyl.You would be best changing for safe side,or warm it up and torque it and see if it stops

I bought a new gasket today I think I will try warming it up and re-torque the head and see if it stops Thanks for the advice.
