Boat AC Issue

My Maxum 2755 1990 boat AC was blowing the circuit breaker. I believe this is a water cooled type AC. The pump is not pumping water out the side like it used to so i am thinking the pump has quit working. Could it be when the system is turned on it senses no water flow and shuts it down. If thats the case I guess I need to just replace the pump. Could there be other issues? it is a 110 system has worked fine till last weekend. thanks for the help

This an educated guess, but from what you describe it sounds like the motor for the pump may need to be replaced. If it was sensor the system would shut down, not blow a breaker. For the breaker to blow there has to be excess current trying to flow. The low flow combined with the tripping breaker would suggest to me as an electrician to check the pump motor.

Without water flow the condenser will not cool, the hot condenser will cause a high pressure situation and the compress will overload. There should be a high limit switch to cycle the compressor.

Before you go replacing the pump, when was the last time your thoroughly cleaned the system? Start at the sea strainer, making sure the thru hull fitting isn't clogged with crap and the strainer is clean and clear (close the sea **** forst & then don't forget to reopen it!). A small round bottle brush is great for cleaning inside the strainer.

The pour some bleach and liquid soap into the sea strainer ans kick on the A/C. You will be amazed at the amount of crap that will come pouring out. Run soap/bleach thru 2-3 times. If it's still not pumping the correct amount of water out, remove the 5/8" outgoing water line from the condenser coils and direct a hard hose stream into the coils, thereby backflushing the system. The coils can get a thin layer of slime built up on them and they will not cool properly. Back flushing them gets that crap off.
