8 Boaters Injured When Speedboats Collide
N.J., June 5, 2000 (The Boating Channel) -Poland NJ police chief was hurt and the wife of a city police lieutenant critically injured in a boating accident Sunday on Lake Hopatcong that also sent six others to the hospital.
Stella Muscarella, 43, of Verona was taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital in critical condition. She sustained eight broken ribs and internal injuries to her liver and spleen, state police spokesman John Hagerty said. Her condition was upgraded to serious Monday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Her husband, Lt. Allan Muscarella, 46, also was hurt in the crash.
Police Chief Anthony Ambrose, whose age was not immediately available, was among seven others in two boats that were injured in the accident. All were taken to St. Clare's Hospital in Dover, Morris County, where they were treated and released.
Ambrose suffered five broken ribs in the crash.
The accident happened at 1:52 p.m. in the Silver Springs section of Lake Hopatcong in Roxbury Township, Hagerty said.
A 25-foot Wellcraft Scarab piloted by Richard J. Paraboschi, a Newark police captain, was leaving a no-wake zone on the lake and began to accelerate, Hagerty said. A 30-foot Sonic piloted by Joseph Waters III, an officer with Newark's special operations unit, also accelerated, but Waters did not notice that Paraboschi's boat had slowed down momentarily.
''The Sonic is piloted from the rear, and when you accelerate it, it causes the bow to go up in the air,'' Hagerty said. ''He couldn't see that the boat in front of him had slowed down, and he ran right up on top of it.''
Hagerty said the incident is being investigated as an accident, and said there was no evidence that alcohol was involved. No summonses were issued, he said.
Mrs. Muscarella was flown to the hospital by state police Northstar helicopter. The others were transported by ambulance and first aid squads.
Others injured were Michelle Paraboschi, 43, of Landing; Marie Casatelli, 53, of Roseland; Cheri Ambrose, 39, of East Hanover; Anthony Guerino, 54, of Roseland, and Joseph Pitek, 42, of Pine Brook.
Source: Associated Press

"...no evidence that alcohol was involved..."

As though that makes big fat a difference??? I guess being an idiot while sober is just fine: Simply an "accident" with no fault or consequences. Whoops!!! If one of the two drivers would have been drinking, would we throw the book at him? I don't see it, the result is the same.

jocko

p.s. Apparently I'd rather share the lake w/ a drunk on a lowly pontoon boat than a sober cop in a speedboat.

I agree but you must remember that either love them (as I do) or hate them, they're still the biggest gang out there!!
Ross
