How safe are those propane barbeques grills you mount on the back of your boat? Conceptually I'm a little leary about running a barbeque on the back of my boat above your engines & fuel supply. On the other hand they seem like they would come in very useful. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to iboats! By nature grills are dangerous...common sense makes them safe(r). I use the Magna kettle grill mounted in a rod holder. Use the grill on the opposite side of the boat from where your fuel tank vent is located, use it over the water, not the boat and keep your extinguisher in sight and you will be fine. Nothing beats grilling on the water!:D

We use our Magma Party Kettle every weekend. They are safe and some manufacturers are making them as optional equipment. Here is a picture of where mine is mounted. Works great and you can't beat grilling on the boat!!

Just make sure you have a good and safe place to store the small propane cylinder. AND NOT in the engine compartment.

Re: boat barbeques

im with fishmen and greatescape I also use a magna kettle grill but I use the rail mount. Never has a safety issue. I try to stay away from greasy foods so I dont get a flair up and dripage on the boat. We use it mainly for dogs, sausages, ka-bobs etc. If we cook chicken or beef we pre cook it at home and just heat it up on the grill.

Boating would not be the same without a grill on the boat. Just mount it away from the fuel vent and and practice basic grill safety and you will be fine. Also if you buy one get a cover for it, it will help keep the lid on if you want to go for a quick cruise with the grill still mounted.

Thanks for all the replies. I've read good reviews regarding the Magna grills. One of my marina neighbors has one and it seems like the way to go for days out. Thanks again for the info.

When you start looking at them I would recommend the ones that have the "hinged" lid. Also they have many mounts available. I just changed mine out to now a new 8 position adjustable.

Re: boat barbeques

Just used my new Magma grill this weekend. Me and my cousin went camping and fishing up at Sebago Lake. We brought burgers, dogs and sausages out with us and it was great. I use the Fish-on rod holder mount to hold mine starboard behind the captains chair hanging over the side, this allows me to flip around the backrest and sit while I cook.

The grill heats up very fast, cooks evenly and cools down just as fast. I would recommend this grill to anyone who likes boating and food. :)

It was kind of windy on sunday so we had to do our best to find an inlet so we could cook without being tossed everywhere.

My uncle also has a magma on his 24' and we use everytime we go out.

they are as safe as the backyard grill, and as you are with the connections.

Re: boat barbeques

What about using one on a smaller boat (like a 17' - 18' bowrider) Sounds nice to BBQ on the water, but is it possible on a smaller boat? I worry that people would see the smoke and think that the boat is on fire! :)
