Boat being grounded

Well I completely took all the old wiring out of my boat. The Birdsnest was not very friendly. While taking the wires out I found unprotected wires, wires with junctions, just all kinds of not right stuff. So here is my problem. Now I have found a wire that runs the length of the boat. I traced it to a bolt on the transop on the inside of the boat. Now that makes me think that somewhere in this wiring the boat was used as a ground. Now I thought that all equipment grounds back to the battery either through junction box or some kind of hookup that runs to the battery? Please correct me if im wrong! Now I have installed a buss box. I think thats what it is anyways. Basically has two hookups a Positive and a negative. Positive to oneside runs through fuse out to device or whatever. Negative well runs back to battery. Now I have stripped everything down to original wire harness coming from motor. Now I have a 1969 Evinrude 115 115983E I have bought all new guages. Now the harness has several colors of wires running from it. Can someone please tell me how I need to hook this stuff up. I have fishfinder,Runninglights, airhorn, and bilge pump thats my equipment. I have purchased speedo, tach, voltmeter, fuel guage, i have choke toggle switch, a red warning temp light, oh and the original ignition. I think thats all. Could someone please tell me how they all hook up and how they should. I have switches for everything except fishfinder. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Boat being grounded

There is a sticky at the very top of this forum with a generic boat wiring diagram. You also need to be aware that there are two electrical systems on a boat -- not just one. The "Boat" harness runs from the battery to a fuse panel. From the fuse panel individual circuits feed a switch and then the other side of the switch feeds the device that switch controls. Grounds for all devices go back to the battery or to a ground buss which is in turn connected to the battery. Then you have the "Engine" harness. The engine harness has the ignition switch, kill switch, neutral start switch, and engine related wires in it. Gauges are powered by the engine harness, not the boat harness. Gauges come alive when the key is in the RUN position. The diagram for the engine harness is in the service manual for your engine.

Thanks for the help! Ok that's what I thought. I always second guess my work and ideas.
