I went to see a boat today that is an 83 Starcraft 16 foot bow rider it has a 90 horsepower mercury engine. I think engine was rebuilt two years ago by black bird industries. This company has a bad reputation. So the engine head was replaced and the put it away due to health reasons. What are your thoughts on buying a rebuilt outboard motor. It looks to good to be true.

A test run on the water should tell you more if the seller will take it out for a run. Otherwise a compression test, checking the LU greese for water or metal chips, amd runnig it on muffs and shifting it from FWD to NUT and REV. will help. As with any purchase of any used motor rebuilt or not, once you pull out the drive, it's yours and not there trouble anymore. If the rebuild was done correctly it should last for several years when maintaned good. JMO

Anything rebuilt is only as good as the person doing the work, the parts used, and what was changed and what wasn't. Simple as that. Sometimes what looks like a sweet deal is a catastrophe.

I have ran a couple rebuilt motors. one good one bad. just depends on the reputation of the builder. I always look for some one local and is willing to warrantee their work. but other than that they are sometimes better than brand new.
