Boat Capacity ?'s

Getting a boat and want to go over what needs to be included in the capacity calculation.

The Outboard needs to be included as well as its mounting

The fuel on board needs to be inlcluded

Does the water in the livewell/baitwell need to be included? I would assume so as its being supported by the boat...

All gear and persons need to be included....

Anything else?

So motor + mount = 150lbs(complete guess...77 Johnson 70hp)
26gal fuel tank = 156lbs
42 gal bait/live wells = 336lbs(please tell me i don't have to count this weight!!!)
Gear always on the boat(battery's, trolling, fish finders, etc) 125lbs

The boat only has a 950lb capacity and already were at 767lbs.

I weigh 200lbs and that puts me over the capacity already by 17lbs. That seems a bit ridiculous.

Am i missing something? Do i really need to include the weight of the water in the livewell/baitwell?

missing the rigging (controls/cables, etc, but not much weight obviously) for the motor, plus I'm guessing a 70 hp motor is more than 150, 250# would be MUCH closer. (a quick google search shows a 1985 evinrude 70hp at 257 pounds)

absolutely bait/livewells need to be counted if you have them filled! They are weight after all, and when you have 42 gallons on board, thats a fair chunk of weight...

although i'd never officially say its ok to go over, some boats handle it better than others. (and many have sunk in relatively decent water, that the boat would have handled if it was at spec)

So basically this boat is worthless?

I can put it in the water as it sits, but if i step in it i'm over capacity.

(i edited my post after you quoted, its worse than that, your motor is 100 pounds heavier than the guess!)

Re: Boat Capacity ?'s

Can you give us more details on the kind, type, and size of boat it is. Does it have a capacity plate? I don't think that I have ever seen a boat that by nature is over it's stated capacity with the standard equipment.

As an example, is the 26 gal of fuel in an enclosed tank or portables. Was the 26 gals original. I guess what I'm getting at is.... a jon boat may be rated for a 10 hp motor and is expected to have one 6 gal portable tank. But if you buy ten portable tanks and put them all on the boat, then obviously it will be overweight.

Re: Boat Capacity ?'s

Seems like all the capacity plates I've seen on outboard boats have 2 weight limits. One for persons and one for everything (persons, motor, cargo, etc). Make sure you aren't using the lower person only capacity when thinking about fuel, water in livewell, etc.

Double check your capacity plate...

My boat is 14'10" (basically a 15ft.)and is rated at 1050lbs. person, motor gear... I run the same motor (77' 70HP Evinrude) which is 250lbs.

Adding in Fuel (29gallon tank) 232lbs.
Trolling motor, two batteries, and other misc gear: 150lbs.

Im roughly at 650lbs... add myself (200lbs) and im getting there... I'm rated for 4 people total, but my one friend weighs 250 alone...

I did stick him, myself and two others, and we were like 200lbs over max cap... but the boat was fine...

I think if you calculate it like you have for yourself, a full load including bait wells and 1 additional person (even if you go over a little) you'll be ok.

Re: Boat Capacity ?'s

Boat capacity ratings are normally number of people AND also list the capacity. The "people" are computed at 150 lbs each so a boat rated for 4 people OR 600 lbs.

That capacity is "cargo" weight and DOES NOT include the weight of the outboard.

If the boat was rated at a maximum HP of 85 (The typical 85 weighs in at 300 lbs) and you are hanging a 70 HP on the transom ......it will not have an impact on the weight capacity.

If the live wells are factory built in then you do not have to count that as weight ....... if you installed them ....then yes.

Feel better ;)

This makes me feel much better...but even the plate says the capacity is including the motor weight. Everywhere i have looked tells me to include the weight of the motor in the calculations.

The livewells are factory(just dropping this weight off the calc is going to drop me to comfortable levels), the gas tank is factory installed.

The boat is a 79 Ranger 158V...i swear that the plate on the boat(and numbers i have found online confirmed it) that the capacity for persons, motor, gear is 950lbs. Its 15'6" in length and a 70" beam. Maybe i mistook the smaller number as the total capacity...its possible i guess.

From the calculation i found which is lengthXbeam/15=number of adultsx150=lbs of people...so i'm going to assume that is the capacity for people only

15.5X5.8=89.9 / 15 =5.99(6) X 150(lbs per adult) = 900(i know the plate says 950 somewhere) I'll re check the plate on the boat.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Re: Boat Capacity ?'s

Check your plate.
I/O are rated differently from Outboards. I/O gives a number of people and a max weight of those people. Outboards give you a number and a max weight of people, along with a not to exceed, total weight, people, motor, and equipment.

Mine gives max. capacities as follows:
Capacity: 8 people = 1300 lbs or less
Persons, motor and gear = 3150 Lbs.

Re: Boat Capacity ?'s

To follow up -

The plate says maximum people only is 500lbs
Max people, motor, gear is 950

I had the boat out Sunday with almost 5 gal fuel in the tank...because it's a small lake and i'm trying to get all that old fuel out before i fill it for the winter

Me(200lbs) and a friend (280lbs)

Well, the bait well doensn't fill by itself(above the water line, and the live well only fills about 1/3 of the way. SO i'm thinking there is only about 50lbs of water in the boat max.

So, i still think the weight limit is on the low side, but i doubt even going over is going to be a problem assuming good lake conditions and no crazy maneuvering.
