I am replacing carpet on my 89 century sport LX and I removed all old carpet, but obviously there is glue residue and carpet old carpet bits remaining. Do I really need to remove all the glue residue etc before gluing new carpet down? Or can I just glue the new stuff over the old residue? I am not picky about whether it is perfectly level flooring

The better the prep the better the results. Run a belt sander over the surface to remove high spots. Seal any bare wood. Your exterior carpet glue will do the rest.
