I bet it was a loose battery or wire on the battery

Does "sold as is" still apply here, to not even get it home is pretty bad.

Almost certainly something not fused shorted out, feel kinda bad for the guy.

I had that happen when I bought a pontiac le mans. Bought it, picked up my friends, drove to the mall... Tried to start it after hanging out in the mall and the engine caught fire.

Became a long running joke with me and my friends.. I remembered the guy bragging when I bought it that (insert southern hick accent here) "ah rebuilt it mahself". Whenever anything would break or go wrong, it was a race to see who would say it first. :)

Seen this once where the passenger was smoking, threw out what he thought was a burnt cig however it wasn't and Bingo, instant boat fire...The picture here however looks like it started up front by the ing switch...Something not fused?

That sucks, had my buddies 5.0 mustang catch fire parked right up by my house years ago, he just installed a killer sound system in it day before... Needless to say house almost caughy fire, car was a total loss... but im familiar with the "pop" noise, we were in the living room his mustang just outside the window, and "POP" we all looked at each other like, wth was that? 5 or 10 minutes later we saw the fire thru the window.... A sight to behold, one crying car owner, one crying home owner! But fire peeps got there and insurance covered the rest... So, I get it :) sux0rs

I'd be asking the driver is he smokes and do you flip the butts out the window? Or some other driver might have flipped his butt out when passing the boat. Now I'm wondering if I should always cover my boat when towing to the lake.

I couldn't find any more info on the local news sites. A loud pop almost sounds electrical in nature. Probably the battery cable. It looks like a nice little boat too.

Once my dad was smoking, flipped his cigarette butt out the window and it went in the back of the truck, landed on a trash bag and set the bedliner on fire. Probably not what happened here, but you never know.

That "Pop" they heard might well have been the battery exploding due to a dead short just before the fire. It happens.

I lean to agree with you - the biggest scorch is right up at the helm, not back by the battery. That's an old Imperial - I'm wondering if he didn't have an auxiliary gas can sitting up in the bow rider or something.

Dad tossed one out his window. Came in the rear window. Thing landed on my head while I'm sleeping. Sister asks "what stinks?". My hair was on fire!
Gosh I miss those family trips.

It looks like he didn't even get home yet. I was suprised to see it happen a few miles away from me. I bet this guy didn't even take it for a sea trial. I guess it makes more sense todo research before you buy something.

I wonder if the PO would have any liability for this or would the new owner's automotive insurance cover it?

Insurance may have covered it if he left it hooked up to tow vehicle.Wouldnt put it past insurance co to deny because of that reason.

Wouldnt it be insult to injury if he got a ticket for blocking side street.(last pic)

I had a close call one time. A friend and I were out in my speedboat one day. it was a bit rough and we were bouncing around a lot. All of a sudden "smoke" started coming out from the area of the control, behind the driver's seat. I was about to yell fire and jump overboard, when I noticed the smoke had no heat to it, and I was sitting right next to it.

Turned out that the freon can on the horn got punctured. The smoke was actually freon.... Remove heart from throat...

+1. The ONE and ONLY time I have thrown a cigarette out my window many moons ago, it blew back in through the rear passenger window of an old Ford station wagon, landed on my soon to be father in law's brand new golf bag and burned a good size hole in it. He was not too happy about my carelessness.....but I still married his daughter...........38 years ago........still think he holds it against me!
