Boat cleats, or lack there of!!

Kind of a weird question. My new (to me), 2001 Aztek sunstar has NO cleats. I keep my boat in a wet slip throughout the summer and obviously need a way to tie it up. Adding cleats seems like its not too hard of a task, biggest point seems to be the backing on the inside of the boat, but my question is, do many people add cleats to ski boats? Or am I going to have the only one with cleats on it? Or should I just not add them and use the bow eye and stern eyes for tying up to the dock, maybe will some good carabiner's on the boat side? Thanks!!

Yes - adding equipment to a boat is a common activity, and it's not that hard, provided you can access the area and have the necessary tools. I can't see a reason not to add them - it'll make it easier to tie it up. I've seen a number of ski boats with them. Here is a video on how to do it.

If you are worried about catching a rope on a ski boat, look into the retractable type.

I don't know anything about your kind of boat but a well-made boat will be made with cleats placed at functional locations. They are essential unless the boat is just going to be used for the day and out back inb the trailer, never moored anywhere.

So definitely convert your boat.
And don't use carabiners; if anything use shackles or clips made for marine use.

Dose it have any chrome deals in or near the places you might want cleats??

If so try pushing down on them and see if a cleat pops up,......

although good backing is obviously preferred, if you can't have it, don't worry for basic calm water mooring. Mount your cleats top side so that the "force" of the line will be perpendicular to the screws--and don't lift the boat straight up by the cleats (not that you would, just illustrating my point). If you need to tow, use the eyes which presumably have backing.

I looked up the specs on the OP's boat- 21 ft and app. 2300 lbs. dry. That's fairly light, so he doesn't need a lot of backing for strength. I added cleats to my 21' Pro-Line WAC and used stainless fender washers (bought them at West Marine) as backing. Worked fine, and the water around here is pretty rough.

I've seldom seen a boat that had enough cleats, or cleats that were mounted in the right locations. Don't be afraid to drill the holes and add what you need. Rafting up and having to hang a stern line, spring line and fender off the same stern cleat is a PITA.

My speedboat had no cleats either. I used the bow and stern eyes to tie up to my dock. Bronze or stainless steel hooks made that convenient.

Just my 2 cents.... I switched out all my old ugly standard stick up in the way trip over cleats to shiny pop ups. What a nice improvement. I have one at port/starboard stern and one on each side mid hull and one center at bow. And regarding Teamster... Many people don't know there are any cleats and ask me how do I tie my boat to the dock. I usually tell them I have a radarmatic proximity magneto proliberation sensor hidden behind the hull; it works similar to the hover craft skateboard you see in Back To The Future.

Pop ups would be really nice, I am just concerned with cutting that hole in my boat compared to drilling 2 holes. Shoot, I not know. I did think about like was mentioned above just using my stern and bow eyes, but my boat stays in a wet slip all summer and I think it would be much easier to tie up with a cleat instead.

Nah... a hole is a hole. Drill 2 or drill four it's all the same. It's really easy... a hole saw and a drill bit. Mark a template, measure twice, and do it. Add sealant and tighten it down. Took me about 30 minutes and made a big improvement, but to each his own.

making it sound that easy makes it more tempting. Decisions suck!!

Re: Boat cleats, or lack there of!!

My boat came with 2 forward and 2 aft cleats. Not nearly enough for me. I bought 2 more pair of the same Perko oem cleats and installed them evenly spaced between the originals. Each has 4 mounting bolts. I made backer plates and thru bolted them all. The drilling took 10 minutes and mounting another 10. It took probably another 15 minutes for each one to remove a small area of foam under the deck where they were mounted. Now I have 8 cleats all matched and they look pretty sharp.

Now when anchored we have lots of extra places to tie up tubes, minnow buckets, etc. We often tie up at restaurant docks, or the town dock for concerts, etc. That gives me a place to hang 4 fenders for near full coverage. The single purpose fender cleats are crappy, IMHO! Naturally we use the cleats for transient dockage as well. For short term attended use like that a solid 4 screw mount is probably sufficient. I overdesigned them just because. For overnight usage, actually I would probably use the bow and stern eyes. More secure, won't interfere with the cover (now you don't need cutouts for the lines), so you'll take less water in the boat when it rains. Most of our local marinas have a drive up cross line with a center hook in each slip. The hook goes on the bow eye.

My son's newer boat came with 4 popups. I guess you could say the flat shiny chrome covers are attractive, but they suck to me. Not easy to use, they wiggle when trying to fasten the end loop on a line, and the opening is a bit smaller than my stationary models. If I bought a new boat and they came as std equipment I'd be looking for a way to replace them. Functionality wins out over appearance. But that's just my opinion.

I can't believe a fancy mastercraft didn't come with cleats....maybe they were an option!

If you do it go with the pop up. Our old boat had the standard ones and sometime tow lines caught on them. The current boat has pop up. We keep them down unless needed. It is also a cleaner look IMO.

Maybe there are cheapies and nicer ones. Mine are awesome, don't wiggle, come up easy, and the hole is fine. Then again, they weren't cheap.

Re: Boat cleats, or lack there of!!

I prefer cleat that are always on, something I can toss a line around or get to quickly. But then again my boats are made for function, not fancy looks. And I am on salt water so chrome moving parts eventually won't be either.

On my bow deck, where barefoot people stub toes, I use the black nylon cleats and chocks
