I am storing my boat outside this winter and am looking for a good custom boat cover. I have seen them on the internet ranging from $150 to over $400. What should I look for in a boat cover, particularly in the fabric, since this is where the price differences seem to weigh in. Thanks!

Re: Boat Cover

Howdy, Gallma.

I've found that even the least expensive canvas covers do well if tightly stretched. If anything can flap in the Winter winds it probably wont last the winter.

I also found that a fabric that breathes works better. With the waterproof and air proof covers moisture stays inside with unpleasant results.

Good luck. :)

gallma,

JB is correct, it has to fit correctly to last.

I do not know how big your boat is. If you are willing to spend upwards of $400.00, you can have a dandy custom cover made. It would be good for trailering also. It will fit like a glove and be of heavier material than most catalog versions.

My dad and I had a custom cover made for his 17' Whaler. It is made of a vinylized canvas. It has numerous vents sewn into it. No moisure problems-and that's in Alabama and Florida!

It has been on the boat for four years now and is still in great shape. It gets 2000 miles of interstate highway use every year also with no problems.

Re: Boat Cover

In nashville, you may have some occasional snow(extra weight) which is not a problem down here on the gulf coast. I would look for not only a waterproof BREATHABLE cover but also buy a support system to keep it stretched tight w/o putting high stresses on the corners/angles. That way you can decrease rain/snow collection in a low area over your boat. It shouldn't be that $$$ unless you want to have one that is truly trailerable and not just for storage. Just my .02 from seeing people who cause lots of damage using regular tight fitting polyprop. tarps w/no vents.
Beaux

The best cover I've ever had is a Sundura polyester marine fabric. Breathes, stays clean and lasts. Bought it from BOAT/US for about $150. Mine is for a 17' foot center console and fits perfectly, even though it's an off-the-shelf item.
