Sorry about the advertisements, it won't happen again.

I saw a few boat ads that I was interested in on Craigslist the other day. The two boats are $500. One was a 1974 Reinell 19' deep vee Closed Bow with a 120 HP V4 Chevy and an OMC outdrive and the other is a 1971 Invader 17' tri hull open bow with a 100 HP Evinrude outboard. I talked to the owner of the Reinell and he says everything works on it, and that he just replaced the floor. He said that after he replaced the floor, he took it to the lake and the engine died on him (could it be a cracked head??). I also talked to the owners of the Invader and he explained that there was some soft spots in the floor, but everything worked great. He said that the engine will start, but it will immediately die (could it be a tune up??). I am looking for a good starter boat that will get me on the water this summer. I like the Reinell's design better than the Invader, but I am being cautious about buying anything that has to do with OMC. They both have excellent trailers, and clear titles on the boats, but the only seller with a trailer title is the Reinell owner. Which one should I go with??

Re: Boat Deals

I would be leery of the first one, as it is an I/O with a problem - not good.

Also, the one with the outboard has a "few soft spots." Soft floors often lead to rotted stringers, and bad transoms.

I would steer clear of both.

Only you can decide which boat you like more or will suit you best, I would stay away from anything that has an OMC though. If you're willing to spend a little more you could find something that doesn't require a ton of work or a new engine just to get out on the water. If you're looking for a bargain and are willing to do some work and you like the Reinell then maybe that is the boat for you. I would rather drop a new engine into a boat then replace the floor anyday, but you're still stuck with an OMC outdrive.

Re: Boat Deals

Take all the good things the "owner said" with a grain of salt.
