hello i have a 1976 erude 55 horse with a jet leg my ? is what should i look for in hull design and boat size for the most efficient boat.
i would like a little speed but was leaning more towards a roomy fishing boat for small to large rivers. usually two adults but two kids occasionally
thank you for any replies.

Re: boat design for outboard jet

i currently have the outboard mentioned on a 13.5 ft vangaard 1962 or so fiberglass runabout that i restored. it has trouble getting on plane but will plane in around 12 to 20 seconds. i wont have the same amount of time to plane in a river in some situations. so i would like to purchase a boat that is going to be easy to plane and steer in tight curves as we mostly fish for salmon and brown trout in medium /large rivers.

That's a very good article RR.
CL...Going to aluminum you can loose alotta weight which is what is killing you now. Read the article and start looking for lightweight...just a thought :)

I also like that article. I've been running jets for about 10 years on shallow rivers - inboard V8 type and outboard. I think all the factors and info in that article are good. For me, the most important thing to look for in your jet boat hull is beam - a wide boat really works quite a bit better. A shorter, wider hull is much better than a longer, narrower hull given approximatly same interior space. My current boat is a full 6 feet at the water line with just a little deadrise like described in the article (don't get a perfectly flat bottom jon boat), and distinctly reverse chines. Pops right up on plane with a full load and stays on plane at a very slow speed which is good for reading a tricky river or maneuvering. My old boat was quite a bit narrower and not nearly as useful at slow speeds.

If you do a web search, you'll find companies that build alum. hulls specifically for outboard jets. Phantom and Alweld are two I'm familiar with. With the proper design, tunnels also work very well with jets.

Although a lot of people don't think they're important, I also like a hydraulic jack plate for fine tuning the height depending on load, cornering, etc. Not absolutely necessary, but nice. Stainless impeller is also a good feature. Have fun with your OB jet.

thanks for the info guys this is a science from what i have been hearing and i wanted to cover all the bases. i have been anchored in the skeena river in boats to small and its not a nice feeling (large glacial river) so i want something quite stable.
i will check the leads you have given.
thanks again.
are we allowed to trade stuff on here?

In the upper Delaware (nothing but rock)I run a Cajon 15.5 ft. triple keel fiber glass flat bottom with a 50hp Johnson head rated at 35hp at the pump. KeelGard on the center keel. Top speed by myself 22mph. Great fast/white water set up and very stable past 1/3 throttle.

IH

we run our boats right up on shore and camp so im a little leary about glass, allso the red deer river is 3 inches deep in some spots, im sure i could get away with it in the skeena river where you are looking at 12 inces at the lowest and thats hard to find. mostly i fish the red deer for big browns, so im leang towards a shallow running boat i can repair easily
