i have some crazy stuff going on with my boat. i took it out of a ride and when i trailered it and went to turn it off, the engine remained running. there was not any hesitation whatsoever so i thought that it was probably the ignition switch. i have since replaced the ignition switch and it didn't solve the problem. what is the world is going on here. 88 wellcraft 140hp i/o.

With the key off measure the positive side of the coil and a good ground, if you see 12v there then your problem is that somehow the coil is remaining energized, ignition switch was a good place to start but now possibly you have a short near the switch or anywhere in the wiring harness or someone put a 12v jumper on the coil to drive you crazy ;)

i don't know about your wiring setup, but my coil does not get its power directly from the ignition switch. the switch powers a relay cube that powers the coil. if the contacts in the cube welded closed it would run on as you describe.

Bob is right on.....Check Voltage to the + side of the coil with Key Off, then on...Now start the motor leaving the Voltmeter OR testlight on the Positive side. Then shut it down...what do you have ? The Power should shut off on the + Side with Key off.
