I have a boat with a 1990 johnson 150 on it. I have just run it for the first time and it drives completely straight i can take my hands off the wheel if needed. and it steers fairly good but it is noticeably harder to turn left underway than right. when i turn right i can do it with a couple of fingers, turning left takes a two hand grip. What could this be is it just prop torque. I dont wanna move the tab cause its going dead straight. Also the prop is very dinged up but i have a new one ordered. Boat runs about 48mph.

When the boats not running does it turn the same to each side? When the boat is under power and your putting around does it turn the same to each side? If the answer is yes to these two questions its probably do to prop torque. You could also check your steering cable if you have one. if its an outboard you can clean and re-grease the steering rod.

the boat steers fine when your not on plane, at low speed idling very easy to turn.

My guess would be prop torque then. My boat turns easier to the right than left also. It's not allot of difference but it is noticeable and it will definitely turn sharper to the right than left.

i don't think the tab is to make it go straight. it is for balancing out the steering pull though. the tab is set to whatever your normal load is and your favorite speed and trim settings. adj. the back of the tab the direction it's easiest to turn the wheel to.
at other speeds and loads and trim settings, the steering may still be difficult in one direction or the other. but at your favorite settings it should steer equally easy, port or starboard.

Did you ever figure this out. I have same symptoms and have adjusted the tab over prop and no help. Someone told me steering wheel but it has no bearings or gears so I cannot imagine that being it.

If You have a right hand direction motor, the rotation of course, dictates centrifical force. Most boats found without an operator on board, are spinning in a ever widening right handed circle. If you have cables and pulleys, there are many products on the market to lube those components. Could also be prop issues. I know someone who has a 17ft skiff with a 90hp. We tried alot of things. Still does it. That boat hauls butt. WE just steer with both hands.
