Today I went to see a 1975 17' Glastron Bass boat. Pics on the web looked great, all fiberglass, nice looking seats, 115 hp Johnson, Minikota trolling motor etc...

Got there and the boat was not so white in person. The seats weren't new and were barely hanging on. Gauges, switches, and lights did not work, owner pretended that he didn't know answers to questions, very shady. I did a compression test and it came out perfect= 120 X 3 & 125 on the 4th.

Dropped it in the water, ran nice, my wife asked seller to let me have a go and he said no! I said to him "well that makes me uncomfortable!" I am here to see if I should buy it or not. He let me drive it after I made that comment to him. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that there was a softspot in the floor where the water drains, I know nothing about reinforcing fiberglass... there were also minor cracks around the fiberglass all around the boat. He said they've been there for a long time and wouldn't get worse. Obviously it didn't start out that way and has gotten worse though!

He was asking $1850. After all was said and done I offered $1400 and he said no. Trailer needed work as well. I asked him how low he would go and he said he would get $1850 for it. Am I out of my mind or is he?? The engine compression was fine, but still a 1975 on a 17' piece of junk.

One more thing, he had ATF in the lower unit, not oil. Thought that was very very strange but he said he learned it from a friend who was a boat mechanic. I don't know what to think about that...

Unless you like totally rebuilding fiberglass boats and know what you're doing, you do NOT want an old rotten fiberglass boat. I personally hate doing fiberglass work and would only pay what I thought the motor was worth. I've never heard of putting ATF in a lower unit, and don't see the purpose or how it would be beneficial, but then again, I'm not a motor mechanic.
The boat is worthless junk, almost positively, based on your description. What you noticed is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the rotten spot on the floor.
I wouldn't pay 1850 for that rig......actually, I wouldn't pay anything for it because I wouldn't buy it. Glastrons are good boats, but no fiberglass boat is good once it's gotten water into it and sat for a long time.

Yeah I figured it would become a headache. The $1400 offer was basically because I thought the motor might be worth that and I could always find a cheap boat without a motor. It's too bad, if it was like it looked in the pics in real life I might of given him $1850 for it. I don't think he's going to be able to sell it for more than what I offered. He might be able to sell the johnson and the trolling motor seperately but that will be a chore.

oh he will... someone who is not smart enough to recognize all the problems you spotted will buy it from him. and when things really start going wrong, they will wonder why!

Re: Boat I went to see today....

Here's some more irony, my wife noticed that he was wearing a landrover shirt, I was too buisy inspecting the boat to notice his shirt. But I googled his name and sure enough he is a used car salesman. Go figure. Just strange that being a car salesman he was not willing to let me test drive the boat. When I did drive it I didn't notice anything wrong with it, wonder what he was worried about. Not too many people buy cars without driving them first....

I'm still interested in the first boat I intended to buy, even moreso now. Hopefully I'll get up to see it this week and everything there checks out. Otherwise maybe it wasn't meant to be. I have seen some really great deals, and I'm just looking for a fair-good one, unless of course a great deal arises that I too can jump on.

just a guess... but maybe he took the boat in trade on something. Some of the smaller corner lot type car dealership occassionally sell boats here. I would not expect them to know anything about boats... or the history of anything on their lots.

I don't know, he said he's had it for 3 years, and he works at a land rover dealership, don't know if junk boats is their forte. He pretended he didn't know things but he had the hood off ready for me to compression test it and I didn't have to tell him to crank it over or for how long. I hope he doesn't rip someone off with that thing. I seriously think the engine might be a good buy (although not for $1850!), but the boat itself is a "good bye!"

I had to check and make sure you weren't from Idaho. This guy has had this boat advertised for a few weeks and I keep thinking that it looks like a pretty good deal. Im not interested in it but I have to browse CL (it's an addiction).

just as an aside, if the Johnson was electric shift, then ATF would be an appropriate lower lube for it, Not normal lower unit lube. Does sound as if the boat needs some TLC though. Price for what it is though is way high.

it wasn't an electric shift, we considered that. He called me back to tell me that he was mistaken and there is no ATF in there. The whole deal was very unusual. After all the consideration I wouldn't even feel comfortable with my $1400 offer.

If nothing else I'm pretty convinced that I may need to spend more $$ to get something decent.

Re: Boat I went to see today....

Thats a $300 package, the engine alone might go $600 max.
The trashed boat and trailer drags the price of everything down.

I've had dealings with those who evade answering straight questions, I wouldn't even waste my time test riding.

and soft spots in the deck aren't really soft spots in the deck ,
they are gut jobs.
I know 36yr old original transoms are little more than pulp.

There are decent boats for $1500.
