I am about to renew my boat insurance and was wondering if anyone had heard of or had some experience with a company called "INAMAR" of the ACE Group? I previously used the well known auto/home types but I am unfamiliar with INAMAR. Thanks.

mkuehnl, Haven't heard of them but you might want to get a free quote from BoatUS (.com) as they also have on the water towing and trailering coverage and help represent the boating community through lobbying efforts in most states. I have found their coverage quite inexpensive as compared to those well known auto/home types, and members recieve discounts on fuel, dockage, ramp fees and more.

I noticed that after my last post and submitted my information. I received an immediate response which was more than twice as high as the INAMAR quote. That is why I am asking about INAMAR. Their pricing appears to be.. well.. too good to be true. I have had INAMAR for the last 3 years and have not had a claim so my only interaction with them has been to write a check out every June.

mkuehnl,

INAMAR has been around a long time. Their headquarters are in downtown Philadelphia, PA (The birthplace of insurance in the US.). INAMAR specializes in marine insurance only. Financially speaking they are one of the top rated companies (Excellent, A+, etc).

When I was shopping for insurance, I got 3 quotes for the same coverage. I don't remember specifics but BoatUS was the highest, Prudential was second and INAMAR beat prudential by about $20.

I decided to go with INAMAR, not because they were the cheapest but it's the company that my agent uses to insure his boat! He stated that he has handled claims for his clients and INAMAR always settles up in a reasonable amount of time without any problems.

Good luck.

Ratfish:

Thanks for the in-sight into INMAR. Its good to know that they are a stand-up company that one can depend upon. Also, they are extremely agressive with their pricing. Another good boating value....

Re: Boat Insurance in the USA

Okay guys, I don't have boaters insurance. I didn't have it on my 16' Gheenoe (2-passenger), 16' Kennedy Kraft(3-4 max. passenger), and not so far on my only boat now, my 16' Glastron (6 passenger).

This boat is worth more than the other two and I will use it for off-shore (a few miles) fishing some.

I know nothing about what "good" the insurance is typically.

Does it cover broken lower units, towing accidents from home to boat landing, towing boat in case of engine stall, etc.?

It might be a good investment for me.

James,

Without insurance, you are flirting with financial disaster.

All policies are different, you have to specify what type of coverages you want. If I can pay substantially less and not get lower unit coverage, I would do it. However, that's because I've never damaged an L/U. But, that's just me.

If anything, go HEAVY on the liability.

You NEED insurance, and yes you can get just liability coverage.

Thanks DJ.

I'll look into some different companies and talk to some fellow boaters around here about what coverages they have.

Listen to DJ. Insurance is a necessary boating evil. Unfortunately, without it you can run-in-to (Please excuse the pun) financial issues with your boat and personal property...
