Not sure what the issue is, but I have a 18ft 1967 Starcraft Holiday that we bought not too long ago and for some reason it seems to wanna tilt to the side way too much when im in it, the last time that we went fishing it was me 6ft tall 300pds and my brother 6ft2 and 280 pds well we both decided to go for the cooler on the same side and it felt like the boat was going to roll completely over, it scared the shizz out of me ...now granted im assuming that its because the boat is kind of light, but is this normal in aluminum boats or is something wrong here?

sooo 600 lbs on the same side of the boat? yeah it's gonna lean.... maybe even capsize, but most likely not.... could be worse..... we have folks on here from time to time that want to put 3 big guys in a 12'er

Guess you guys know to synchronize your movements now

Re: Boat is very unstable!

Do you have alot of weight high in the boat, an 18 footer should be pretty stable I would think, I have a 16' Sea Nymph and me and my buddy at @ 180 each can both stand on the edge of the boat in the same place and it leans abit but I have never worried about it flipping but I have a full main k with 2 castingdecks so there is a good but of weight low on mine.

What is the beam, width, of the boat, it has to be better than 56'', adn is is just a hull or is there decks and such in it?

The only thing I can think is it isn't leaning quite as much as you think, this would be normal for a 12' jon but an 18 something sounds wierd.

even at 19 a boat will succumb to 600 lbs on one side.....

you want a scare????? try a bc ferrie at 300 ft when a pod of killer whales swims by !!!

1000 tourists with cameras head to one side of the boat all at once ! the boat will list heavy....10 deg !

I had a '65 18' Holiday I/O. It is a semi-V mono-hull, with dead rise at the transom, and made of alum. Yes 600# on one side will certainly make a difference. Yes it feels light and nimble which it was/is. Sounds normal to me.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....

As yer learnin',.. walkin' 'round in a boat is considerably different than walkin' 'round on dry land....
Any boat will lean, when weight is shifted about....
Especially when talkin' that kinda tonnage....;)

I agree. Almost 600 lbs. on one side is a lot. That's more than 3 of me. I doubt the hull itself weighs much more than that. As you've learned, weight distribution in a boat is very important for achieving ideal performance. You'll either need to get a bigger boat so that the weight affects it less, or be more mindful when y'all are moving around. I think that's about all you can do, unless you want to add outriggers, or something to the sides, which might cause you to loose some serious style points. I think the rule of thumb should be that big boys need big boats with big motors to keep 'em moving.

A Catamaran would work. Course there are other options. Grin. Don't know what you thought I was going to say, but I had reference to too much beer in your cooler. Another grin.

oops--should've put quotations (was a ref. to Jaws :) ) luckily i have a 18fter but I only weight a buck 50. I would be scared in a v bottom with 600lb fellers:)

Spontoons/sponsons/ transom mounted floatation pods. What ever they are called would make the boat more stable. Meybe putting the ice chest in the center would help too

Counterbalance...it's all about having the proper ballast in the proper location...suggest maybe a couple of kegs??...*grin*. Of course, those kegs would have to be loaded with ginger ale since I would NEVER condone alcohol on board!!
