Ok,
I've done planty of dumb things on and off the water, but this one was (mostly) a freind of mine. I invited him out on on my "new" 15ft fiberglass (late 50's) Tomahawk. On the way to the launch, Ed was telling me all about his boyscout merit badges for boating safety. Well, we get to the launch, and I have to stay in the truck (no parking brake on manual truck) and I send him back to unhitch boat from trailer.
He asks how to un-hitch the chains. I tell him there are wing nuts on the chains, so he doesn't need a wrench. (Yes, I told him that) Then he says he can't get the tongue to un-clamp. (no red flags in my mind yet at this point). I start looking on the floor of the truck for a jack handle , then it dawns on me, he is un-hitching the boat trailer into the river. I explained to him that we don't need to un-hitch the trailer, just the boat.
He later told me that the merit badges were for row boats.
