I have a 1975 Glastron V-178 bowrider boat with a 1975 mercury 1500 "tower of power" on it...my question is: does anyone have a guess as to how fast this boat should run at 5500RPM with a 13" diameter 17 degree prop on it....

Mid to high 40's maybe better

you have PTT? Look up speed on prop calculator. Guess at various slips until you get it close

My 17' CeeBee Avenger with an '88 115 TOP 13/17 does a reliable 48 mph and just over 50 with a light load and glassy water. I'd imagine you should get similar.

Ya mid 40's is a good guesstimate. Not one of Glastron's faster hulls ...

Chad, your Avenger (if like mine). has a flatter vee hull than that Glastron. I would think that will slow that boat some from your numbers.

True, but I was thinking the extra HP might help get a few more mph out of her. And of course prop is important. I switched to a stiletto stainless and it added 6 mph over the black max that was on it. The rake and cupping of the stiletto made a marked difference on top speed, cornering at speed, and getting on plane. An excellent $250 investment!

Chad, Your '88 TOP makes nearly as many ponies as his 1500 does. You should have the powerported pistons. Any idea what your Avenger is rated for as Max Power?

Re: Boat/motor guestimate on MPH

The Hull is only rated for 125hp. Pretty much need to stay where I'm at to keep it insurable. Honestly, on this low profile boat, that mostly gets used on the bay and harbor, which can get fairly choppy, it's fast enough. Only way to get into trouble this way is to be a total knuckle head and not watch what you're doing. Plenty of large troths to avoid in this area. If I were mostly on lakes I might want to squeak more out of it! For Skiing, towables, and cruising 115 is plenty.

Probly get in trouble for saying this, but ... I consider HP ratings a dare.

Extra HP is like money in the bank. Y'ain't gotta use it all at once.

Thankfully the water cops 'round here could care less 'bout how many ponies yer packin. They're more interested in how well you handle them.

Fwiw I tell my insurance co only what they need to survive ...

i,ll say 47-52mph and you will probably need a 19 pitch prop.

In your wildest dreams. I'd be surprised if it broke 45. Might run 52 off a waterfall ...?

mercury tested that boat in 1973 with 3 different engines, 65hp, 85hp and 115hp. the 115 did 43.3 mph.it,s on the fiberclassics website under glastron.with a 150hp it should get in that range.
