I am looking at a boating package that features a 16' aluminum boat with a 50hp two stroke engine, Mercury 50ELPTO. The boat's hull weight is 995 lbs. The boat is going to be used just for fishing. My question, is this motor powerful enough for a boat this size or should I be looking at a 60hp.

Re: Boat Motor Power

Look at the boat max HP rating.

Any engine of at least 70% of that HP will do nicely.

Most of those big store "packages" underpower the boat to keep the advertised price low and give buyers the extra cost option of adequate power.

FWIW , the boat in my avitar is a 15 footer , has a 50 hp johnson 2 stroke , Factory hull weight is 450 + my addons + fule +me = Close to the 900# and I can go 30 all day long ..Like JB said , the closer to the max hp you can afford the more you will enjoy your new boat . Some of us Have even been known to shout "The max is never enough":D peter

I had 2 16' starcraft alum bowriders with 55's and they ran fine.
