Boat needs an alignment!

I thought with all the steering system threads that have been popping up lately I'd start my own :D I have a 1980 17ft Imperial Tri-Hull with an 85 horse outboard. I replaced the steering system last year with a new Teleflex as the old cable was so stiff it took 2 hands to move the wheel. This new system is silky smooth now! The only issus I have is if I put it in gear and start moving, the wheel will whip all the way to the right and the boat will go into a tight spiral. I have to keep pressure to the left on the wheel at all times when running. I have tried to adjust the exhaust port/trim tab to componsate, but it made no difference. If I have a full tank (portable 6 gallon tank stuffed under the splashwell, on one side, battery on the other) and can shift 1-2 people on the left side, it will balance itself out better. Engine appears to be centered, but I have not run a tape over it to verify (although due to the mounting system there is only one position it can mount). Anyone run into a similar issue?

take a CLOSE look at the metal brackets that attach to the transom. I've seen similar things where a bracket will break on one side and will flex under load. The trim tab doesn't do much at idle, which it sounds like yours is fighting you even at idle speed.

Check your tab in back of the prop. If your motor turns freely to the right, loosen the tab and adjust it one mark to the right and drive your boat again. If it steers easier to the right again adjust it another mark to the right and drive the boat again. When the steering turns to each direction with the same pressure you are good to go.

I am assuming you mean starboard. So with that turn the trim fin to the starboard. Always move the fin in the direction the engine wants to go. That opposes the force. Everything being right you may need a no feedback system. Also check your hull bottom for any irregularities that may cause the hull to drag or veer that direction.

Might be a mute point but is your prop counter or counter clockwise turning?
