boat not starting

hello to all....i was wondering if some one here would have answer....i bought a boat it sat for 2 years...would not not start just a click took starter out had it tested it is fine..bought new battery and still nothing come to find out engine seized...took out spark plugs...sprayed wd40 and put three screws in the front engine to break free...it did...so cranked slow so i replaced battery...cranked a little better but no starting yet...then i replaced coil and gave tune up...still nothing so i turned the distributor cap alittle and sounded like it going to fire but dont.....so turned it alittle more and nothing still the same sounds like it is but still nothing..and condser wire is almost at bottom...help....please......boat is galaxy225 weekender..1989...mercruiser 3.0 liter.... thanks

Sounds like you may be in for quite a bit of trouble shooting before you get this baby smoothed out. If I were playing with this motor I'd start by removing the sparkplugs, giving each cylinder a few squirts of wd40 or oil, do a fresh oil change as soon as it breaks free & starts turning fairly easy. Let the oil blow out the sparkplug holes. Once it is turning freely put in some decent sparkplugs (not necessary to be new). Be sure to check for fire from sparkplug & coil wires. If it is firing put in the plugs, squirt a little gas or starting fluid down carbureator... I advise putting flame arrestor on. Then try to crank it. You could be facing lots of things, stuck lifters is a possibility. May be a good idea to remove valve cover and pour oil over cam followers before cranking. If possible get oil on the cam. I've known people who would pull out distributor and turn oil pump shaft with a screwdriver or even a screwdriver in a drill to get oil in engine before cranking. I highly recommend you check compression. Be sure you have distributor set correctly for timing. If you have fire,compression, and fuel it should crank if the timing is close. Once you get it cranked and run it a little it is ready for fresh sparkplugs and a good tuneup.

Just a little bit of advice...... I am in same situation as you... I just bought a boat that has been sitting for 1.5 years... This was a saltwater boat.... I got it running and it runs good but everything is rusty on it and more and more problems keep popping up.... Mainly there is a lot of crap in the cooling system from rust... you may want to check that out real good before you go to far..... Check the impeller as well....<br /><br />Tallman
