Yes if you run your outboard on land for more than maybe a minute without the hose attached correctly you can be certian the impeller is probably bad.

If it's bad it would not cool the motor and that would blow up/die.

If it has a little squirt of water, or the same water amout in the exhaust, them maybe it's still ok.

Re: Boat operation question

you should change it once every year or two regardles...

rubber perishes.. it will weaken, not seal against the pump walls as well.

Also some weakness's will not be that apparent under normal inspection, since at speed the impeller changes shape somewhat and is under a good deal of strain.

get yourself a good manual, and change that puppy now..

regards

Franki

Robert,
If you are talking about the flush attachment on the powerhead, then no, don't run it with that. You need to use flush muffs connected to the lower unit water intakes. Just to be clear!
Look at the picture. Just make a water reservoir (i use an old fuel barrel). Put motor lower unit to reservoir an fill it by (fresh of course)water. Water level should be 1-2 inch above the anticavitation plate.
!!! DONFORGET TO REMOVE PROPELLER BEFORE !!!
Now just start engine and you can service it..
Watch for water level.

Good Luck !

Re: Boat operation question

It all sounds good. Let me ask one more question.
If an impeller was bad, could the result be that water, while the boat is now in the lake, would flow out the hole where you attach a hose for flushing and not the two holse it normally flows out of on the powerhead? When I run the motor this is what it does.

You could have an impeller that has partially disintigrated with a piece getting stuck somewhere. That might account for the PSI reading. Ony way to tell is to open it up and if you do that might as well replace the impeller. While you are at it I would take the thermostats out and backflush the coolong system by putting a hose on the water tube above the waterpump. And replace the thermostats.

Re: Boat operation question

Propeller MUST be removed for safety reasons.
Propeller slightly roatate even at neutral gear position. It can damage reservoir (usually made of steel) an itself.
AND if you unfortunately switch to forward/reverse it can seriously injure you

Re: Boat operation question

Robert
Some newer motor have a flush hose to the power head. This hose is to flush motor of Saltwater without running the motor. All that I have seen need to be plugged when not in use so water pump water does not run out there instead of going to power head.
